Historical Markers of Washoe County & Reno
Location: Sparks Directions: At the corner of B Street and Pyramid Way (SR 445)
N 39° 32.082 W 119° 45.157
Date Conquered: 9/23/07 Quick Description: A marker noting the beginning of Nevada's rich network of railroad lines. Signed: No -- This marker has never been signed. Notes: The first thing hunters will notice about [189] Southern Pacific Railroad Yards is its pesky placement! This conquering is ridiculous only because of the lack of immediate parking at this intersection. Avoid the temptation to park at the 7-Eleven across the street. Instead, park at Victorian Square and make the short walk from Railroad Park across Pyramid Way. The cluttered intersection surrounding [189] screams chaos! View taken from the 7-Eleven parking lot across B Street. Full Description: Exact description as reads ... Soon after 1900, some 373 miles of the original Central Pacific (now Southern Pacific) line between Reno and Ogden, Utah, was rebuilt. The work involved shortening of the line in some places. One such change took Wadsworth (Nevada), a division terminal, off the main line. During the summer of 1904 the terminal was moved to this location, which became the town of Sparks. A huge 40-stall locomotive roundhouse was dismantled in 1959. Still standing are the machine and erecting shops. Had it not been for the railroad yards being moved here, the City of Sparks would not exist. What an awesome concrete view. This is another terrible placement by the SHPO. This marker would be better placed on the other side of I-80 at the actual railroad yards.
