Historical Markers of Washoe County & Reno
Location: Reno Directions: At the intersection of N. Center and E. Ninth Sts.
N 39° 32.182 W 119° 48.887
Date Conquered: 6/12/07 Quick Description: A unique dedication to the Grand Army of the Republic. Signed: No -- Historically, this marker was never signed. NOTES: The streets around this section of Reno can be a bit confusing. This marker is essentially right next to the campus of the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) so these streets can also be quite busy! Although #81 is pretty easy to find, the test is seeing the marker from the curb and parking to conquer it for yourself. Your best bet is to park a block away at "Ninth Street Park", a half block east of the marker and walk. Parking on the street and in the lot right next to the marker is strictly prohibited without a campus permit and subject to fine! Full Description: Exact description as reads ... This tree was planted in soil from Civil War battle fields and dedicated to the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic by the National Commander in Chief June 10, 1913. Can you see the visibility dilemma here? Another case of bad placement by the SHPO! A better spot for this marker would've been on the lawn directly behind the tree, or on the sidewalk at the intersection. (The manicured lawn directly across the street is the campus of UNR.)
