NOTES: If you find the streets around this section of Reno to be confusing, you wouldn't be the only one. [81] Grand Army Republic Tree sits right across from the campus of the University of Nevada Reno (UNR). Expect these streets to be quite busy with pedestrian traffic. Good for you because there is no way around it: the only way you'll be able to conquer this marker is on foot. Although [81] is pretty easy to find, the test is actually spotting the marker from the curb. If that wasn't enough parking is added issue. Your best bet is to park a block away at "Ninth Street Park," a half-block east of the marker; from here, walk west back to Ninth Street. Parking in the lot right next to the marker is strictly prohibited without a campus permit and is subject to fine. Don't test it, folks.

    Full Description:
    Exact description as reads ...

This tree was planted in soil from Civil War battle fields and dedicated to the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic by the National Commander in Chief June 10, 1913.

Can you see the visibility dilemma here? Another case of bad placement by the SHPO! A better spot for this marker would've been on the lawn directly behind the tree, or on the sidewalk at the intersection.
(The manicured lawn directly across the street is the campus of UNR.)

Fact #81: The University of Nevada began its life in Elko in 1873. A few years later, the state of Nevada moved the university to Reno because of Elko's remote location.
