Quick Description: A unique dedication to the Grand Army of the Republic.
Signed: No -- Historically, this marker was never signed.
NOTES: The streets around this section of Reno can be a bit confusing. This marker is essentially right next to the campus of UNR, so these streets can also be quite busy! Although #81 is pretty easy to find, actually seeing and parking to view the marker is a different story. Your best bet is to park at the Ninth Street Park, a half block east of the marker and walk. Parking on the street and in the lot right next to the marker is STRICTLY PROHIBITED without a campus permit and subject to fine!
Full Description:
This tree was planted in soil from Civil War battle fields and dedicated to the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic by the National Commander in Chief June 10, 1913. It was marked and rededicated by Isaac Crist Camp Number 28, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Johana Shine Tent Number 82, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War--Reno, Nevada, October 18, 1969
Can you see the visibility dilemma here? Another ridiculous case of bad placement by the SHPO! A better spot for this marker would've been on the lawn directly behind the tree, or on the sidewalk at the intersection.
(BTW, the manicured lawn directly across the street is the campus of UNR.)
